Will Smith May Play Two Assassins In “Gemini Man” For Director Ang Lee

THR is reporting that Will Smith is currently in negotiations to star in Gemini Man for Skydance with Ang Lee also in talks to direct.

The plot is centered around an aging assassin who suddenly runs into what could be his greatest challenge: a clone of himself that is 25 years younger.

The script for Gemini Man has been floating around Hollywood since the late 1990’s when it was set up as a pitch to be directed by Top Gun’s Tony Scott. The project had been hampered for years due to technology limitations, as most people wanted both parts to be played by the same actor. It should be noted that the original idea was for Harrison Ford and Chris O’Donnell to play the older and younger assassins respectively, which is just another clue of just how long this script has been circulating. In the ensuing decades, Mel Gibson and Clint Eastwood have both been considered for the lead role.

Digital de-aging has made a lot of strides since then, with some high-profile examples being The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and last year’s Captain America: Civil War.

Neither Will Smith nor Ang Lee have officially signed on as of now, but adding talent to a project is always a great idea, and this pairing is just zany enough for me to buy in.

Ang Lee is the first Asian to win the Academy Award for Best Director, having won for Brokeback Mountain and Life Of Pi, and also nominated for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. He directed Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk last year, and is currently in pre-production on Thrilla In Manilla, a film based on the final fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in 1975.

Will Smith has been nominated for two Best Lead Actor Academy Awards, for Ali and The Pursuit Of Happyness, and even though last year saw him pop up in the negatively received pair of Suicide Squad and Collateral Beauty, I know he still has great performances to give with the right material.

What do you think about this potential pairing? Can you think of a better actor or director for this script? Are you excited for Gemini Man? Let us know in the comments section below!
