Now that we’re firmly in the middle of the year, it’s time to start learning about what will be populating movie theaters for the end of the year. What comes out at the end of the year, besides Star Wars movies? Well that would be what some people refer to as “Oscar bait”.
First off, I don’t really like that term. The biggest implication is that people only make these movies in order to win awards, and while some people certainly sign on for that chance, it disregards the notion of people devoted to their craft seeking out good art to help make.
Anyways, enough nonsense from me. Let’s watch the trailer.
Stronger will be telling a much smaller scale story of the Boston Marathon Bombing of 2013 than last year’s Patriot’s Day, which is something that I do initially like the idea of. A smaller story (in theory) means more focus, and part of my issue with Patriot’s Day was that it tried to cover too much and lost track of things.
Stronger tells the true story of Jeff Bauman (Jake Gyllenhaal), a man who was one of the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombing, and shows his struggle with trying to regain his ability to walk. Clearly, this is yet another showcase for Gyllenhaal, who has been crushing it with the string of Prisoners, Nightcrawler, and Southpaw. Hopefully getting more to do than just be the concerned girlfriend is Orphan Black star, Tatiana Maslany, who absolutely deserves more spotlight and I hope this helps her star grow.
Another reason to be interested is director David Gordon Green. Green has directed a wide span of films like George Washington, Pineapple Express, and Prince Avalanche. While he’s certainly had some missed, he is a director that I’m always interested in following.
What are your thoughts on Stronger? Will you be checking this out on September 22? Let us know what you think!
