Red Sparrow: Trailer Review

I’m well aware that many people are experiencing a sort of “Jennifer Lawrence fatigue”, but I’m never tired of seeing talented people in films. While her Academy Award nominations for American Hustle and Joy were a bit excessive, her work in Winter’s Bone and Silver Linings Playbook absolutely deserve acclaim, and her presence in the Hunger Games and X-Men franchises really elevated the early films.

Francis Lawrence may not be a very big name as a director, but hearing that Jennifer Lawrence was reteaming with her Catching Fire director is something to note.

I also literally just realized that the lead actress and director have the same last name. Huh.

This trailer doesn’t give us too much just yet, and that’s my favorite thing about it. I’ve already discussed how I prefer to only know an idea of the plot and a pinch of the tone, and that’s exactly what this trailer gives us.

The film is based on the Jason Matthews novel of the same name from 2013, which follows Dominika Egorova, a Russian secret agent who undergoes training to be able to seduce her enemy, which is known as a “Red Sparrow”. This is the part that will be played by Jennifer Lawrence. We don’t see too much of her performance from the trailer alone, but she is certainly capable of playing a sort of detached character with a lot more boiling underneath, which seems to be exactly what we’ll get from this role.

The film also stars the likes of Joel Edgerton, Charlotte Rampling, and Jeremy Irons, which is a very exciting supporting cast.

Red Sparrow is set to hit theaters on March 2, 2018. Hopefully, it will be one of the beacons that lights the way for the early year slump we usually see.
