Some people are interested in a film based on the members of the cast. Some people are more interested in the plot, what the film will actually be about.
I am most likely to be into a film based on one fact: the director.
Oh, you say that Wes Anderson has a new film?
I don’t even need to review this trailer then. It’s good. I’m seeing it. I’ll probably like it quite a bit. Once you’ve got films like Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom, and The Grand Budapest Hotel in your back pocket, I can trust you to make whatever you want.
Oh, it’s another animated movie? Like the really good Fantastic Mr. Fox? Yeah, I was already on board. Let’s go.
Well damn. That both managed to be nothing like I expected and also exactly what I would have expected.
The plot synopsis is as follows: Set in a dystopian future Japan where dogs have been outlawed due to a “dog flu” and have been quarantined on a remote island, Isle of Dogs follows, on the eponymous island, five local dogs who are fed up with their isolated existence until a boy named Atari ventures to the island to search for his dog, Spots. Atari receives their help and they will protect him from the Japanese authorities who have come to retrieve him.
Hey, that sounds pretty bonkers, right? I dig it.
Those five dogs are voiced by Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, and Bob Balaban. That point on it’s own would get me into a theater, but that’s only a small portion of the cast. The voice cast also features the likes of Frances McDormand, Harvey Keitel, Greta Gerwig, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Ken Watanabe, F. Murray Abraham, and a number of Japanese actors that I am unfortunately not very familiar with. Maybe this is a good excuse to do some homework.
Isle Of Dogs is set to be released on March 23, 2018.
