Hot off the success of The Big Short, director Adam McKay is floating around several projects for his next feature. The most prominent of these being a biopic of former Vice President Dick Cheney, continuing his political subject matter spree. It appears as though he has his perfect cast in mind, and it is all down to the studio to seal the deal. McKay has his eyes on Christian Bale to play Cheney, with Amy Adams as his wife Lynne and Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, who was Secretary of Defense at the time. It is unknown exactly what timeframe the film plans to cover as of now, but the goal is to shoot in September and release late in 2018, presumably for an awards push.
This Cheney biopic isn’t the film on Adam McKay’s desk. He is also attached to Bad Blood, which is set to star Jennifer Lawrence. Lawrence will play Elizabeth Holmes, founder of controversial Theranos. The company claimed in 2003 that they could test blood from only a pinprick instead of traditional blood-drawing methods, only to be investigated for inaccurate testing, causing their $9 billion value to plummet. The production timeline is unknown currently.
Personally, I didn’t love The Big Short, but I came away positive with it. I really appreciate his directing style, which is something I probably wouldn’t have noticed with his earlier Will Ferrell-starring comedies. If staying in the world of politics and business is what he’d rather do from now on, The Big Short is enough to keep me interested along the way.
Adam McKay was Oscar-nominated for directing The Big Short, and won the Academy Award for adapting the screenplay. He is also known for directing Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy and Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby.
Christian Bale won an Academy Award for his role in The Fighter. He was also nominated for American Hustle and The Big Short.
Amy Adams has been nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Doubt and The Master. She should’ve been nominated (and possibly won) for Arrival, but the Academy doesn’t listen to me.
Steve Carrell has one Oscar nomination as of now, for his leading role in Foxcatcher.
Jennifer Lawrence won an Academy Award for Silver Linings Playbook and was nominated for three others.
