OLD NEWS ALERT! And by old news I mean “Hi! I was supposed to have this done three days ago but whoops I’m bad at most things including deadlines.” ANYWAYS, if you haven’t heard yet, Jude Law has been cast to play the one and only Albus Dumbledore! I’m not gonna lie to you, when I first heard this news I was excited as heck. And now that I have had time to think about it and really do some soul searching I have decided that I am indeed freaking excited. As. Heck. But before we talk about my own feelings, let me give you the lowdown.

So, this Fantastic Beasts sequel will be taking a darker turn into the wizarding world as a war brews and the characters must choose which side of the battle to join. We will also be meeting a slew of new characters including a young Albus Dumbledore, the transfigurations professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While we don’t know for sure whether Dumbledore will have a large role in this film, we do know that he played a significant role in both Newt Scamander’s and Gellert Grindelwald’s lives.

Richard Harris and Michael Gambon’s portrayals of Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films set the stage for what we need to expect from Jude Law. Brilliant and a bit strange, Dumbledore’s character requires a truly skilled actor to portray all of his uniqueness. Whether you love him or hate him, Dumbledore’s character has many dimensions and each one of them is important to the story. Not only is Law going to have to bring to life the iconic Dumbledore we have already met in the Harry Potter films, he is going to need to bring something fresh and new to the role and make this Dumbledore his own.

I believe he can do it. Maybe that’s just me being optimistic and hoping that he overshadows the fact that Johnny Depp is in the movie (not a fan of that choice). Maybe it’s just that sweet sweet velvety voice (I’ve even tweeted about it @imalittletaypot). Or maybe I just have faith in the man and believe that he got this role for a reason (please, Warner Bros.) Whether or not Law lives up to my expectations in this film, I am so excited to see where he takes Dumbledore and how he chooses to make the character his own. Don’t mess it up, Law.

The next Fantastic Beasts film will be out in November 2018.
